Jesus didn't just come as an example for christians to follow. Jesus didn't just come so that we could be forgiven. Jesus came to be our substitute instead of example and He came to make us be able to live in right standing (righteous) with God so that we don't even have the need to be forgiven any longer. All of this is due to the work of Jesus taking on the wrath due us.
